Directed by Alejandro Gomez Monteverde and written by Rod Barr, this lushly mounted and visually beautiful film explores sexism and anti-Italian bigotry in 19th century New York. It depicts the life of Francesca Cabrini, an Italian nun, luminously portrayed by Cristiana Dell ‘Anna. Upon her arrival in New York, Cabrini is greeted by disease, crime, and impoverished children. Driven by a strong sense of injustice and her indominable will, she sets off on a mission to secure housing and healthcare for society’s most vulnerable, in the face of prejudice and the antagonism of the city’s mayor, played by John Lithgow in an amiable portrait of misogyny and intolerance. Cabrini is an uplifting biopic with a timeless message that honours the little-known efforts of these fearless women.
