…Poignant and appealing. An everyday story that unfolds with deceptive simplicity, delving into the lives and the problems of recognisably real characters with delicacy and nuance. Handled with dexterity and empathy, this is more sympathetic and more absorbing than most other contemporary French films.

This sweet, witty, sad drama addresses a common modern problem – partnering with someone who has children, when you are reaching your own reproductive use-by date. Rachel is a dedicated high school teacher keen to build a relationship with her new partner’s five year old daughter, while having to share her with her mother, and being fully aware that her own biological clock is ticking. There are tears, but also plenty of comedy in this gentle, heartfelt relationship drama. Its emotions are never far from the surface, but they’re unpredictable and that’s part of the charm. While not a lot happens, it is more than enough.
