No-one does mild-mannered, gently acerbic cinema for the matinee crowd quite like the British, and the new Steve Coogan movie, The Penguin Lessons, is no exception. Based on an unusual real-life story, it’s a shamelessly corny heart-warmer, despite its outwardly grumpy protagonist and veneer of political engagement.

Directed by Peter Cattaneo (The Full Monty) and starring Steve Coogan and Jonathan Pryce, set against the backdrop of the political protests over the escalating 1976 Argentine coup d’etat, The Penguin Lessons is inspired by a true story of a disillusioned Englishmen, Tom Michael (Steve Coogan), who takes a position in an exclusive boys school in Argentina and finds himself in a divided nation with a class of unruly spoiled students. Michael’s life is turned upside-down when he takes a trip to Uruguay and rescues a penguin from an oil spill. After it refuses to return to the ocean, Michael brings the penguin with him to Argentina. Now named Juan Salvador, he becomes a popular pet at the school with whom you can share your thoughts and secrets.
