Alan Bennett’s new film, directed by Nicholas Hytner, is a quiet and consistent pleasure: an unsentimental but deeply felt drama which subcontracts actual passion to the music of Elgar and leaves us with a heartbeat of wit, poignancy and common sense.

The Choral (2025), directed by Nicholas Hytner and written by Alan Bennett, is a poignant British historical comedy-drama set during World War I. In the fictional Yorkshire town of Ramsden, the choral society struggles after many of its male members enlist to fight. Left with teenagers, old men, and a demanding choirmaster, Dr. Guthrie (Ralph Fiennes in a studied, delicate performance), the group prepares its concert. Amid laughter, scandal and song, the choral members face the looming reality of conscription, while the community clings to music as a source of unity and hope. Balancing humour with deep emotion, the film explores resilience, grief and the uniting power of art. With a stellar ensemble cast, The Choral celebrates how creativity and tradition can sustain spirit even in the shadow of war.
