This movie is still utterly compelling thanks to a brilliant screenplay and soundtrack, superb acting and great direction by Rachel Perkins.

Three very different half-sisters are reunited in their mother’s home after many years apart, when their mother dies. Resentments surface and the usual family dramas ensue. While not directly referencing the effects of history on the lives of Aboriginal people, we become aware of the impact of such events on individuals (e.g the two eldest sisters were raised in institutions). Based on a play by Louis Nowra, this is Rachel Perkin’s first feature film (1998), Warwick Thornton’s first as cinematographer, and the first to have three indigenous women in the lead roles. With the beauty of the landscape, great acting, direction, cinematography, and soundtrack, it is well worth re-visiting this film for its historical significance, and artistic merit. It is our contribution to NAIDOC week, in recognition of some of our best indigenous film makers.
