New Zealand’s prime minister Jacinda Ardern’s rise as the world’s youngest female leader, and her time in office, is explored in this documentary. Much of the footage is personal, filmed by her partner Clarke Gayford in their home, but interspersed with her public actions in extraordinary events such as the Christchurch mosque shootings and the Covid epidemic. What makes Prime Minister compelling, is how it looks beyond the public image we see of most politicians, to reveal the real person. As one reviewer says, ‘she looked like an actual member of the human race’. The film has won the Audience Award at a number of festivals. It doesn’t ask you to agree with Ardern’s decisions; rather it gives us a rare look at the human making them.
