Barbara (Judi Dench) plays a lonely and bitter teacher at the end of her career. When a new young teacher Sheba (Cate Blanchett) arrives at the school, Barbara becomes besotted with her. On finding out that Sheba is having an affair with a 15 year old student, Barbara uses that knowledge befriend and to control her, eventually leading to the loss of Sheba’s marriage to Richard (Bill Nighy), and her job. The movie has been described as being ‘about something deeply unlovely in human nature rarely explored by poets, or novelists, or film-makers: the explosive combination of desire and social envy’. This is a riveting and disturbing drama, with stellar performances from great actors at the peak of their powers.
