When an elderly Japanese man’s wife dies, he reads a note stating her last wish to have her ashes scattered Lake Windermere, the scene of a much-loved visit in her childhood, and a ‘trip we never got to make together as a family’. He sets off with his son, daughter-in-law and grandchild to make the pilgrimage. Things do not go well between him and his son, so he heads off on his own despite his lack of English. Flashbacks reveal his life and relationship with his wife – the joys and regrets. This is a beautiful, understated movie, full of grace; and a tribute to the universal experience of grief, and family differences, which transcend different cultural attitudes to death.
