In 1935, as Falangist forces prepare to wage war on their Republican adversaries in Spain, young teacher Antoni Benaiges arrives in a remote, priest-ruled village where the children blossom under his creative influence and flair. Seventy years later, the granddaughter of one of the children learns about Benaiges while seeking the fate of her great-grandfather at the forensic exhumation of a mass grave, one of many left by the civil war. She is unwell, and time to establish the truth is running out. The film was inspired by Franco’s policy of memory erasure, Spain’s exhumation movement, and the true story of Benaiges. It captures the eagerness of children to learn, the genius of great teachers, and the ruin wrought by sustained denial. Winner, Gaudi Audience Award, Barcelona, 2024.
