Much of The Richest Woman In The World is played for laughs… But this is comedy of manners rather than satire or burlesque, permitting us to take the characters seriously enough to speculate on what drives them.

Isabelle Huppert plays Marianne Farrère, the aging head of a global cosmetics empire. Aloof and controlling, she lives a life of consummate boredom. Everything changes when she meets Pierre-Alain Fantin (Laurent Lafitte) during a photoshoot. A gay man many years her junior, Pierre-Alain seduces her with his charm and wit. Having insinuated himself into Marianne’s life, he sets about the enviable task of separating her from millions of Euros—at least, until her daughter intervenes. This twisted farce is inspired by the real-life scandal of Liliane Bettencourt, heir to the L’Oreal fortune. ‘A scathing and delightful film. A picture of an upper-class family, its unspeakable secrets and internal wars, centred around the queen mother, magnificently portrayed by Isabelle Huppert, and her jester, played with relish by Laurent Laffitte.’ Franceinfo Culture
