Based on a Patrick White novel and directed by Fred Schepesi, this film features some of
Australia’s finest actors “whose superb performances anchor the caustic social observations and dark yet incandescent wit” (Hollywood Reporter). Set in the Sydney suburb of Centennial Park, the action centres on rich, egocentric, matriarch, Elizabeth (Charlotte Rampling) and her two expatriate children, Basil (Geoffrey Rush) and Dorothy (Judy Davis), the former a London-based actor, the latter a divorced French princess living in Paris. Both very much feel a “cultural cringe” upon returning to Australia to visit their dying mother, but are also in need of her money. Neither will ever get over the way she denies them her love and continues to humiliate them, right to the end.
