“The Blue Caftan,” like its title garment, has a handmade, lived-in quality, an authenticity that marks Touzani — a former journalist making her second feature — a director to watch.

The Blue Caftan

15 JULY: 3 pm & 7 pm
122 Mins | Morocco | Drama |

VENUE: MALENY COMMUNITY CENTRE
23 MAPLE STREET MALENY

Winner of numerous awards, this film takes us to a medina in Morocco, where Halim and his wife Mina run a small shop specializing in traditional caftans. It’s an art form requiring special skills that are hard to find, but their search for an apprentice is fulfilled with the arrival of Youssef. It soon becomes apparent that there is an attraction between the two men; and also that Mina is in the final stages of breast cancer. Halim loves his wife and is very attentive to her, the reasons for which become apparent. Described as a scrupulous, compassionate, and quietly captivating film, we follow the ways their relationships develop, and how love can help transcend life’s complications.
