This is a complex, rich and nuanced work, funny as hell and devastatingly bleak. Colin Farrell delivers his best work. Brendan Gleeson, Kerry Condon and Barry Koenig are beyond excellent, etching memorable, instantly classic portrayals.

How would you feel and what would you do if, out of the blue, in middle age, your best friend abruptly ended your relationship? Pádraic finds out, on a remote island off the west coast of Ireland, when Colm brings their lifelong friendship to an abrupt, irrevocable and, to Pádraic, cruel and incomprehensible end and discovering repeated attempts to repair the friendship spiral shockingly out of control. Described by Peter Bradshaw as “a study of male loneliness and swallowed anger”, this film is directed by Martin McDonagh, reuniting the lead actors, Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson, of his much-loved modern classic, In Bruges. Farrell and Gleeson exhibit their legendary on-screen chemistry to devastatingly effect in this “flawless tragicomedy” which “swings between the hilarious, the horrifying and the heartbreaking” (Mark Kermode).
