Sweet As excels at presenting its teenage protagonists as fully fleshed-out human beings. Our protagonist Murra is labelled a ‘troubled youth’, but her inner world is full of hopes, dreams, frustrations, and clever insights – despite her unsafe home environment, or perhaps even because of it.

In remote Pilbara country, a young First Nations Australian woman in trouble with the police is thrown a potential lifeline: the opportunity to go off in a bus with other ‘at risk’ teenagers on a National Geographic Photo Safari. This summarises the experience of both the director, Nyulnyul and Yawuru woman, Jub Clerc, and, years later, the lead actor of Sweet As, young Adnyamathanha woman, Shantae Barnes-Cowan. Sweet As also features other First Nations Australian actors who cut their teeth on TV programs like Mystery Road and Rake and feature films like Blue Back and Last Cab to Darwin, all filmed by award-winning female cinematographer, Katie Milwright (who filmed Gurrumul). “An uplifting coming-of-age movie about unconventional friendships, first crushes and finding who you are on the path less travelled”.
