Bringing a sweet amount of dignity to the art of imitation, Song Sung Blue mostly avoids becoming a mere cover of the documentary on which it’s based thanks to Hugh Jackman and Kate Hudson’s heartfelt performances.

When Lightening and Thunder fall in love, the storm that is their life is told to the soundtrack of Neil Diamond. Hugh Jackman plays Mike, a Vietnam veteran and recovering alcoholic with a bad heart, who makes ends meet by playing small gigs. He meets Clare (Kate Hudson), a hairdresser who moonlights as a Patsy Cline cover artist. Adapted from Greg Kohs’ 2008 documentary, the film is based on the lives of a real-life Milwaukee couple who fell in love, formed a Neil Diamond tribute band, and became local celebs.  Writer/director Craig Brewer tells the somewhat tragic events of their lives with warmth, humour and an amazing soundtrack. Both Jackman and Hudson provide heartfelt vocals that make a Beautiful Noise. After all, a Song Sung Blue, everybody knows one.
