Kate Winslet brings a steely determination to her portrayal of former model turned WWII photojournalist, Lee Miller. Following Allied forces into France after D-Day, she came under fire while working on the front lines. Miller also witnessed the liberation of Buchenwald concentration camp. Lee depicts Miller’s struggles against a military hierarchy which did not want her exposed to the hazards or brutality of battle. Director Ellen Kuras gained access to Miller’s extensive photographic archive, and her photographs are woven into the fabric of the film. Four stars from The Guardian’s Wendy Ide, who comments ‘What Miller saw at Buchenwald haunted her for the rest of her life – something Winslet conveys in a single, wordless scene.
