…This is a true gem of a film. A sort of feel good comedy with a bit of romance and some social comedy thrown in.

Dave Fishwick (Rory Kinnear), a popular, knockabout chap living in Burnley, Lancashire, has made his money as a retailer of vans and minibuses. After generously lending money to needy friends and customers over the years, Dave decides to formalise his loans by opening a ‘corner store’ bank. However, Dave’s application to register with the London banking establishment is viewed with disdain. After all, the (FRB) Financial Review Committee hasn’t approved a new bank for 150 years!  So, a stuffy lawyer, Hugh, (Joel Fry) is sent up north to investigate. What ensues is both disarming and delightful.  Closing credits feature a photograph of the real Dave, informing us that The Bank of Dave is still operating and has lent $57 million, with profits donated to charity
