Deftly exploring the uneasy tension between artistic expression and personal connection, Sentimental Value is a bracingly mature work from writer-director Joachim Trier that’s marvelously acted across the board.

Film director Gustav (Stellan Skarsgard) has been estranged from his two daughters Agnes (now a historian) and Nora (an actor) since his divorce. They reunite after their mother’s death to sell her house. Gustav hopes to make a film about his mother (who was in the Norwegian resistance and suicided when Gustav was 7) in the same house, with Nora playing his mother – a role she flatly refuses. What happens next becomes an intimate and moving exploration of family, memories, intergenerational trauma, and the reconciliatory power of art. Sentimental Value won the Grand Prix at Cannes in 2025, received nine nominations at the most recent Academy Awards, and became the first Norwegian film to win Best International Feature Film.
