Primavera (2025) is an “arresting” and “beautiful” Italian historical drama directed by Damiano Michieletto, centering on a young, talented violinist, Cecilia, in 18th-century Venice. Based on Tiziano Scarpa’s novel Stabat Mater, the film explores themes of artistic freedom, female suppression, and empowerment as a young woman (played by Tecla Insolia) finds her voice under the tutelage of composer Antonio Vivaldi.

Meet Cecilia, a gifted violinist confined to the Ospedale della Pietà, a Venetian convent where abandoned girls study music. When they perform for their patrons they are hidden behind grilles intended to preserve their virtue. In her late teens, Cecelia will soon leave her prison for a choiceless future. Enter Antonio Vivaldi, the Ospedale’s new music instructor. He encourages Cecilia’s extraordinary talent and helps her envisage a future in which her gifts will be treasured. Vivaldi spent 30 years at the Ospedale refining his genius for the concerto. In Primavera we meet him in another role, that of an inspiring mentor.

‘The technical craft is spectacular, from the stunning cinematography to the lush production design and costumes, and of course, the magical score.’
