On January 29, 2024, Red Crescent volunteers received an emergency call from a 6-year-old girl (Hind Rajab) trapped in a car under fire in Gaza, pleading for rescue. Her voice was beamed around the world, highlighting the effect of war on innocent children. Director Kaouther Ben Hania reconstructs the efforts of the volunteers to get help to her, using real footage and the recollections of those trying to save her. What emerges is a damning indictment of systems that fail children, and a study of collective responsibility. This film won 9 awards at the Venice Internation Film Festival including the Golden Lion for best picture. It received the longest standing ovation ever at nearly 24 minutes, has won many other awards, and was nominated for this year’s Academy Award for Best International Film.
