Paris, 1959. Acerbic young film critic Jean-Luc Godard finds himself in a quandary. Many of his contemporaries have already shot their first movies, so he’s feeling left behind. With co-writer Francois Truffaut, he develops a treatment for a movie about an impulsive criminal—and convinces Jean Seberg to star as the female lead. Tensions arise when Seberg kicks back against Godard’s improvisational approach. Nouvelle Vague plunges us into the creative ferment of the time, when enfants terribles tore off the shackles which hobbled conventional filmmaking. Rich in period detail, this movie is a cinephile’s delight. Shot in black and white using a 4:3 aspect ratio, Nouvelle Vague is acclaimed filmmaker Richard Linklater’s witty homage to French New Wave cinema.
