Black Dog, directed by Guan Hu, is a poetic and intense homecoming drama set on the edge of the Gobi Desert. Eddie Peng stars as Lang, a brooding ex-rock star who returns to his remote hometown after serving a prison sentence. Grappling with societal change and his own past, he joins a government dog-catching team as the town undergoes upheaval ahead of the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Lang’s development of a deep bond with a stray dog forms the emotional core of this visually stunning odyssey. A movie for animal lovers of all kinds, its surreal imagery and compelling narrative explore themes of redemption and self-discovery. The film won the Un Certain Regard prize at Cannes 2024 for its daring storytelling.
