Thelma, directed by Josh Margolin, stars June Squibb as a 93-year-old grandmother swindled out of $10,000 by a scammer posing as her grandson (Fred Hechinger). Determined to reclaim her money, she embarks on a daring quest across Los Angeles, joined by an old friend (Richard Roundtree in his final role). Mixing humour and action, the film reimagines classic genre tropes, with Margolin drawing on personal inspiration from his own grandmother’s real-life experience of being scammed. Thelma showcases Squibb in her first leading role, delivering a performance of grit and charm. Balancing laughs with poignant moments, Thelma is notable for its heartfelt exploration of aging and independence.
